Ph.D PROGRAM IN ECONOMICS
The Department of Economics, in addition to its noteworthy position in undergraduate education, in recent years has placed a special emphasis on expanding its graduate programs. Admission for graduate degrees is highly competitive and many candidates for academic positions in the Turkish Universities see entry through this fierce competition.
The Ph.D. program is one of specialization. The graduates will probably become academics and experts in their field of specialization; thus, the selection of courses and subjects in their education becomes crucial. Students may be accepted to the Ph.D. program after obtaining their B.S. or M.S. Degrees. Those with a B.S. degree take fourteen courses, seven of which are compulsory. The compulsory courses consist of a term of mathematics for economists and two-term sequences of macroeconomic theory, microeconomic theory and econometrics. Those with an M.S. degree take seven courses three of which are compulsory. The compulsory courses are the second parts of the microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory and econometrics sequences. The elective courses are chosen from a list that spans political economy, economic history, macroeconomics, microeconomics, international economics, monetary theory, CGE models, development economics, and macroeconomic issues of developing countries, industrial economics and applied econometrics.
A number of assistantships will be available to outstanding graduate students.
