FIRST TERM:
SENL 111 Theories of Literature and Culture I
The course will examine seminal texts under the broad headings: Psychoanalysis; Phenomenology and Hermeneutics; Marxism; Deconstruction and Poststructuralism
SENL 112 Research Methods
The course aims to familiarise students with the methods of literary and cultural research in writing scholarly papers and the dissertation.
ELECTIVES:
SENL 180 Revenge Tragedy
This course will examine the form and function of the revenge tragedy in Elizabethan and Jacobean drama by analysing the works of various playwrights.
SENL 181 City Comedy
By focusing on the works of playwrights such as Ben Jonson, Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker, this course will explore how Renaissance London and its citizens became the common material of satirical comedy in the seventeenth century.
SENL 182 Christopher Marlowe
A critical and historical approach to the plays and poems of Marlowe and some of his contemporaries.
SENL 183 Special Studies in Literature
The course focuses on topics of special literary and critical interest and may vary each academic year.
SENL 184 Comedy of Humours
The course explores the various manifestations and contexts of the genre developed by Jonson.
SENL 185 Collaboration and the Art of Playwrighting
This course will involve textual analysis of some of the many plays of the Elizabethan and Jacobean period which are attributed to more than one author and examine possible reasons for collaboration.
SENL 186 Textual Variations
An examination of how there is no one true text for many of the plays of the Early Modern period. This course will concentrate on the differences between published quarto versions of a particular text and determine how the variations may change the emphasis of the play.
SENL 187 Court Masques
This course aims at a socio-political analysis of Renaissance court entertainments.
SENL 188 Readings in Literature
Critical studies and close readings of selected texts and literary genres. It may vary each academic year.

A close examination of the work and contexts of Blake.
SENL 18A G.B. Shaw: Plays and Criticism
A contextual study of the plays and criticism of Shaw.
SENL 18B H.G. Wells
A close examination of the novels and short stories of Wells and other turn of the century science fiction writers.
SENL 18C Novel in the 1890’s
Literary and social concerns in the novels of Hardy, Wells and Conrad with an emphasis on the relation of the writer to society will be explored.
SENL 18D Oscar Wilde and Aestheticism
A contextual study of the plays, poetry and prose writings of Wilde and other aesthetes.
SECOND TERM:
SENL 211 Theories of Literature and Culture II
The course will examine seminal texts under the broad headings: Cultural Studies; Feminism; New Historicism; Postcolonialism; Race and Ethnicity.
SENL 212 Seminar
The aim of the non-credit graduate seminar offered by faculty and guest speakers is to widen the candidates’ critical awareness and perspectives.

A study of the history of Shakespeare’s plays in performance from their first appearance on the Elizabethan stage to present-day performance by the Stratford-upon-Avon and London companies.
SENL 281 Mystery, Miracle and Morality Plays
The rise of drama in England with a close reading of the selected works.
SENL 282 Contemporary Irish and Scottish Poetry
An exploration of the literary, historical and political contexts of Irish and Scottish poetry.
SENL 283 Further Studies in Literature
The course focuses on issues of interest and may vary each academic year.
SENL 284 Drama from Ibsen to Brecht
Significant characteristics of modern drama will be studied with a close reading of the selected works excluding British Drama.
SENL 285 Postmodernist Drama
Based on a close reading of selected works, the course will examine postmodernist trends in drama.
SENL 286 Novel from Balzac to Dostoevski
The course will examine masterpieces of world novel from Balzac to Dostoevski.
SENL 287 Postmodernist Fiction
The course will examine postmodernist trends in the novel focusing on issues like historification, intertextuality, meta-fiction and contextualisation. Selected readings will include Fowles, Ackroyd, Winterson and Barth.

An in-depth study of designated topics in literature which may vary each academic year.
SENL 289 War Poetry
An exploration of the literary, social, and political contexts of the poetry on war.
SENL 28A Rewriting Fiction
A contextual study of various texts which are in themselves adaptations, rewritings or translations of other texts.
SENL 28B Rewriting Drama
A contextual study of various plays which are in themselves adaptations, rewritings or translations of other texts.

The course will explore the link between poetry and politics.
SENL 28D Drama: Language and Politics
The course will explore the link between drama and politics.
SENL 28E Turn of the Century: fr. 1980 to the present
The course will examine the literary, cultural, social, and political contexts of the novel, poetry, and theatre of the period.
THIRD AND FOURTH TERM:
SENL 390 Dissertation
Upon completion of the required course work, students must write a dissertation, of around 20000 words, on an approved topic.
