Ders İçerikleri
Comparative Literature
This course aims to explore the literatures and cultures of Eastern and Western Europe, in addition to American and Middle-Eastern culture and literature in the 19th and 20th centuries. Depending on the instructor's choice and the students'preferences, genres to be selected for study and discussion (i.e. the novel, drama, prose or poetry with art, music and film) will be determined on a yearly basis
Theories and Approaches to Drama
This course aims to expose students to the formal conventions of performance and production, and the stylistic principles of playwriting, as reflected by various theories of drama. Beginning with a critical examination of Aristotle's Poetics, this course will introduce students to alternative approaches to dramaturgy and play-production, ranging from the Scribean formula of the well-made play, to Bertolt Brecht's epic drama and the principles of the theatre of the absurd, to conventions of post-modern performance narratives and of post-colonial theatre. In addition, this course will involve students in the analysis of specific dramatic texts and performance pieces in light of the theoretical paradigms that will be Discussed in class.
Advanced Readings in Literary Theory
After a very brief introduction of the history of literary criticism, the focus of this course will be on several major approaches in contemporary literary criticism such as: New Criticism, Reader-Response Criticism, Deconstructive Criticism, Psychoanalytical Criticism, Feminist Criticism, and New Historicist Criticism. Our examination of these various approaches will will not only aim to cultivate an understanding of the principles that have originated within each movement of criticism, but also on identifying what is of integral importance in any given reading. Readings will be drawn from the works of Saussure, Shklovsky, Barthes, Eagleton, Iser, Showalter, Lacan, Bahktin, Jameson, and so on.
Communications Studies
The aim of this course is to place the study of language in a broader intellectual perspective. This will be emphasized by showing how language relates to other modes of communication, within the more general heading of semantics. The development and the current scope oflinguistics, as well as the science of language study, will be discussed.
Themes in Cultural Studies
This course aims to cultivate an understanding of the meaning of the word 'culture' and the way in which it shapes who we are and how we live, as well as our social and national characteristics, our rituals and our beliefs. In addition, this course aims to develop an awareness of how culture influences the production of artworks, narrative texts or consumer habits. In this context such sub-fields as space and time, nationalism and globalization, multiculturalism, gender, postmodernism, media, etc. will be covered by analyzing the works by T. Adorno, R. Barthes, J.Clifford, C.Geertz, J. Lyotard, S.Hall, T. Bennett, et al.
Themes to the Novel
In 1824, Scott defined the novel as, a fictitious narrative accommodated to the ordinary train of human events, a definition which may be considered still valid today. Before the twentieth century there were various novel genres such as the novel of sentiment (Mackenzie's Man of Feeling, Stern's A Sentimental Journey), the historical novel ( Scott's Waverly, J.Porters Scottish Chiefs), the Gothic novel ( Walpole's The Castle of Otranto), regional novel (Brontes- Yorkshire, George Eliot-Midlands ), the realist novel (Arnold Bennet's Anna of The Five Towns). After the twentieth century we see the emergence of the modern novel (Lawrence, Woolf, Lessing), the post-modern novel( John Fowl's The French Lieutenant's Women, Anita Brookner's Look At Me ) and the postcolonial novel. This course aims to study in detail the novel's typology and its dominant characteristics.
Feminist Criticism
Is a critical aproach to be detected in the 1960s and 1970s. It ranges from the scholar to the political and perscriptive, seeks to examine women' literature of the past and present with the aid of a new feminist awareness ( raised consciousness) of female and male stereo types, women's economic situation as authors, the prejudice of male critics and publishers, the relationship between writing and gender, etc.
