Program tanımlarıPh.D. PROGRAMSINPOLITICAL SCIENCE AND PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION
The Department of Political Science and Public Administration at the Middle East Technical University has a long tradition of pioneering studies in politics and public administration in Turkey. Founded in 1956, the Department offers graduate programs for M.S. and Ph.D degrees. The department's graduate programs, designed to prepare students for advanced specialization in the twin disciplines of political science and public administration, are distinguished by the quality and flexibility of their curricula. With faculty that have a variety of specializations, extending into such disciplines as history, sociology, cultural studies, media and communication studies and area studies, the Department of Political Science and Public Administration offers courses beyond those in the specific fields of political science and public administration. The department displays a commitment to diversity; not reflecting a single dominant methodological or ideological approach to the study of political science and public administration. This flexibility creates a stimulating environment in which graduate students are encouraged to study political science and public administration from different perspectives and with varied interests.
The department, its faculty and highly qualified graduate students create a stimulating intellectual community. Faculty members are readily available for close student consultation. While independent studies (mostly for Ph.D students) are typically carried out in small groups with two to three graduate students working on related topics, structured courses are conducted in classes of ten to twenty students. In the independent studies students write several papers under the close supervision of the faculty member in charge. Graduate students can also choose elective courses from other programs at the university.
Ph.D. students are encouraged to plan a four-year program, in the first two years of which they can complete the structured courses and independent studies as well as take the Ph.D. Qualifying Examination. In the remaining two years of the Ph.D. program the candidate is expected to complete the research and writing of a Ph.D. dissertation.
At the present, there are approximately 100 graduate students. In keeping with METU's tradition of an international student body, the Department of Political Science and Public Administration encourages the presence of foreign students.
