The Department of Secondary School Science and Mathematics Education coordinates several teacher training programs in Teaching Chemistry, Teaching Mathematics and Teaching Physics at the secondary school level.
The department aims to produce science and mathematics educators able to meet the increasing demand for high quality teaching. Graduates are expected to be reflective and competent educators, sensitive to the demands of their job, responsive to a developing education system and technological requirements, committed to continuing their own professional development and ready to play a leading role in the field of science and mathematics education.
All three programs include courses offered by the departments of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (predominantly in the first three years) and the Faculty of Education. Courses offered by the Faculty of Education cover curriculum and professional studies introducing various aspects of education, psychology, guidance, and classroom management. Courses offered by the Department of Secondary School Science and Mathematics Education integrate theoretical considerations in the field with methodology and practical applications in the selected secondary schools. The five year program leads to a master's degree without thesis (M. Ed.).
The M.S. program in Secondary School Science and Mathematics Education comprises a minimum of 24 credits of course work, a non-credit seminar and a thesis. The minimum number of 24 credits consist of 4 required and 4 elective courses. Elective courses may be chosen from among the courses offered by the program, the Institute or the university, subject to the approval of the advisors. Students with a B.S. or B.A. degree from the faculties of Education, Arts and Sciences, Engineering and related fields can apply for the M.S. Program in Secondary School Science and Mathematics Education. The candidates must complete the course work in two successive semesters; however, students with a non-education background may be allowed to extend their course work to three semesters at the discretion of the advisor and the Institute.
